This application-based license is specifically designed for use with CODESYS Virtual Control for Linux SL. It enables communication at the management level – for example, between controllers, HMIs, or SCADA systems – via various technologies such as OPC UA. The required license size depends on the number of data points (communication tags) used. When using OPC UA, two options are available: Symbol configuration – Based on an existing application, symbols to be accessed can be easily selected. OPC UA information models – These are generically supported. Their contents are translated into corresponding IEC data types and declarations. Data reception is handled via data sources. The source can be another CODESYS application or any OPC UA server. Metric: Number of communication tags Communication tags are counted based on variables from the following configurations: Communication Manager Symbol Configuration Data Sources (Data Source Manager) Variables with basic data types (e.g., BOOL, INT, REAL) are counted individually. For arrays, each index counts as one tag; for structures, each variable within the structure is counted. The XXL-size license permits the exchange of an unlimited number of data points. This license is not required for classic fieldbus communication (IO tags). Licensing Single Device License: The license can be used on the controller where the CODESYS runtime system is installed. The license is activated in a software-based container (soft container) that is permanently bound to the controller. Note: Without a license, the software will run in demo mode for two hours. After that, a manual restart is required. Please note that the use of these application-based licenses requires CODESYS Development System V3.5.19.7 or higher and CODESYS Virtual Control SL Runtime Software Version 4.12.0.0 or higher. Source: The required software can be obtained from the WAGO Download Center: CODESYS: https://downloadcenter.wago.com/latest-of-productgroup/codesys Runtime: https://downloadcenter.wago.com/software/latest/runtime-codesys-virtual-control-linux Demo Mode A controller without a license runs in demo mode for two hours. After this period, the runtime system will shut down and must be restarted manually. The functionality of demo mode is not restricted, but unlicensed functions have a shorter demo runtime (e.g., fieldbuses operate for 30 minutes). License Check When an application-based license is available on the controller, all criteria are checked against the limit stored in the license. If any criteria exceed the defined limit, the application download or boot application loading will be blocked. No transition to demo mode occurs. This prevents the system from reverting to a time-limited demo mode during production.
